BIG RAPIDS — New school met old school as hoverboards invaded the Big Rapids Roller Rink on Saturday.

The rink hosted its second hoverboard night this year from 5-7 p.m. with dozens of people showing off their skills on the motorized boards.

Big Rapids Roller Rink, located at 325 N. Michigan Ave., owner and operator Carl Skinner said the night was a good way for kids who got hoverboards for Christmas to get them out and have fun.

"Kids get these hoverboards for Christmas, but due to the weather in Michigan, they don't really get to use them until the summer or when it's dry out," Skinner said. "Here, they get to use them and enjoy some fun activities."

During the evening, participants were able to play in events, including a four corners game where hoverboarders went to each of the four corners of the rink with each corner being eliminated by random draw. Drag races were also held throughout the evening, with winners getting a free slushie.

The next hoverboard only event will be held 5-7 p.m. March 25.
