Glenn Duffy Elementary students enjoy Buddy Day

GRAVETTE -- Students at Glenn Duffy Elementary School enjoyed their annual Buddy

GRAVETTE -- Students at Glenn Duffy Elementary School enjoyed their annual Buddy Day Friday, May 12. During this "play day," each student is matched up with a buddy with whom they participate in events. Each wears a lanyard with their name and has it punched at each station they visit. Approximately 20 stations are set up around the GDE playground, and each student is free to participate for about two hours.

A wide variety of activities is available for students to enjoy. Some of these include wagon races, scooter races and trike races, a mini golf course, football throw, "dinosaur dig," spoon races, water fun, including duck races and water gun battles, hula hoops, sack races, spoon races and a Baggo game. They can get their face painted or have their nails polished. Several bounce houses are set up and paid for by the Glenn Duffy Elementary PTO.

Kindergarten students took to the playground in the morning and first and second graders in the afternoon. Students who were not participating in outside activities were able to watch a movie at a "Lion Theater" set up in the gym.

When all the action made a student thirsty or kicked up his appetite, he could visit the snack tent where he could choose from a variety of snacks, including chips, fruit snacks, crackers and cheese, cookies, healthy apples and granola bars. Cold bottles of water and juice packs were available for the thirsty.

None of the activities would be possible without the abundance of volunteers who assist with the event each year. High school basketball and volleyball players, GHS EAST students, junior and senior high cheerleaders and members of the National Junior Honor Society and other clubs are a few of the groups that volunteer. Parents and other community volunteers donate the snacks, drinks and other supplies needed to hold the event.

Volunteers also grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and provided a picnic lunch for teachers and staff in appreciation for all the work they do caring for and teaching Glenn Duffy students throughout the year.
