Plumes of smoke have been seen across Bristol this evening after a "substantial" fire started at a home in the city. Fire fighters from three fire stations have been dispatched to the scene in Cotham.

Crews from Temple, Bedminster and Southmead are in Trelawny Road where a blaze started in the upstairs of the property. The occupants of the house have all escaped and no injuries have been reported.

While most of the flames are out, hotspots are still being extinguished. A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said they had been alerted to the incident around 6.30pm.

He said: "All the occupants are out of the house and there have been no injuries. It was quite a substantial fire.

"It involved a bedroom and loft and crews from Temple, Bedminster and Southmead attended. They expect to be there for about another hour putting out hot spots," he said.

He added that breathing apparatus and external fire fighting equipment had been used to extinguish the blaze and damping down is continuing. Residents in the area had spotted large plumes of smoke billowing into the air in the early evening.

The firefighting crews are expected to be there for up to another two hours.
